citizens are among the dozens of people at an american gas plant. what more do we know, michelle? >> secretary of defense leon panetta said an overnight attack on the natural gas facility in algeria was a terrorist attack. both he confirming that americans are held by islamic militant though won't say how many. those americans are part after larger group of foreigners with several nationalities. the natural gas production facility is in north africa near the libyan border. it is a joint venture between bp of the uk, stat oil of norway and sonia track, the al geerian state oil company. this is courtesy of google maps. in statement, bp says the attack was midnight eastern time and that quote contact with the site is extremely difficult. but we understand that armed individuals are still occupying the operations site. according to reports from journalists in wenern who have n in contact with the kidnappers say this is because of insurgence in neighboring mali. france, by the way, already on heightened security alert as a result of situation in mali, which by the way, also borders on

back to the fast money halftime report. i'm michelle caruso-cabrera at the breaking news desk. the state department confirms a number of americans are among 41 people being held hostage in algeria. bp, british petroleum confirms an attack occurred overnight in a natural gas production facility in the southeastern part of the country. it's a natural gas plant operated in a joint venture by bp of the uk. stat oil of norway. and also sonatrach, the algerian oil company. what we are showing you is production facility courtesy of google maps. that is in amenis on the border of libya. journalists in the country of mauritania say they have been in contact with the militants and they have been told this attack is in retaliation for french air strikes against islamic militants in mali which also borders on algeria. the state department is set to hold a briefing at 1:00 p.m. we hope to get more details. once again, a number of americans being held hostage as a result of a gas -- of an armed attack on a gas production facility in algeria in northern africa. scott, back to you. >> michell

gas facility over there. michelle caruso-cabrera has the details. this is a tricky one. what can you tell us? >> well, the reports are conflicting and confusing. there are casualties but we don't know how many. at least one british soldier died during the event. here's the chronology as we know it. early yesterday, islamic militants take them at gun point who all work at a natural gas plant which is co-owned by british petroleum and early this morning the algerian government begins a military operation to take back control of the facility. ten hours later reports that the intervention is over and some, maybe many, are dead. secretary of state hillary clinton addressed reporters earlier in the day saying the u.s. has long been committed to fighting terrorism in the region. >> we know we face a continuing, ongoing problem and we're going to do everything we can to work together to confront and disrupt al qaeda in the islamic maghreb. we'll be working with our friends and partners in north africa. >> and now we have learned, larry, that u.s. officials have told nbc news as many as seven

injured. michelle kosinski is in london with the details. good morning. >> reporter: it happened at 8:this morning. a commercial helicopter carrying two passengers crashed into a construction crane at the top of a tall residential building behind us. cutting off a big chunk of that crane and sending the chopper hurtling to the ground, ending in a fireball that claimed the lives of the pilot and a person on the ground. someone nearby described the chopper as landing on top of a car which was also in flames. we know at least one person was trapped inside of a car and was rescued. another eyewitness said she was leaving a nearby train station and had been looking up at the buildings in the fog marveling how she count see them at all. at that moment she heard an explosion that sounded like a bomb terrifying everybody in the area and than small meteor shower with debris raining down. nine other people were hurt. part of the investigation is whether the light on top of that construction crane was working properly. richard? >> thank you so much. bill karins confirming what we saw. very foggy weat

's not helping the markets there. let's bring in michelle caruso-cabre caruso-cabrera. >> yeah, you could see it was choppy and spain borrowed a whole lot of money, $6 billion worth. they had no trouble doing so. that helped push the euro to the highs of the day. we're showing you the ten-year yield for spain over the last year. it's down -- we wanted to give you context. remember it was the summer when they were getting very nervous about 7% yields. now we're down to 5%. some of the spanish bonds very long term. due in 2041. so they have clearly regained some of the confidence of the markets. take a look at this six-month chart. the big decline in particular of nearly 30% when it comes to their long-term interest rates. european stocks, they were choppy today though. driven in part by a german news report that said german regulators are running a simulation on what would happen if banks were forced to split their retail and investment activities. think of german glass steagall. so they got hit particularly hard, falling more than 3% before recovering off the lows. there were rumors denied by

. nbc's michelle kosinski has the latest for us in london. michelle, good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, savannah. this is changing by the minute. the latest from the associated press, quoting an algerian official, is that at least 20 of these hostages have now been able to escape, including americans. the al qaeda-linked militant group that has claimed responsibility for this say they have been holding 41 hostages, among them, we know americans, british, norwegians, japanese and they claim that this is retaliation for french intervention in neighboring mali against islamic militants there. at this hour, scattered reports out of the algerian desert that this large bp gas facility that a standoff is going on, that the algerian army has the militans and dozens of international hostages surrounded. among them, americans. >> in order to protect their safety, i'm into the going to get into numbers. i'm not gonna get into names. i'm not going gonna get into any further details as we continue to work on this issue with the algerian authorities. >> reporter: french television is quoting one
